Your imagination is the only limit when it comes
to designing the scenery for your model railroad. To start this
process you will probably want to purchase a basic set of scenery
accessories from the local hobby store that will have all kinds of
models and basic structures that you can use to develop your
particular themes. There are also excellent model towns that you
can assemble with glues and paint yourself. Just a little
creativity can turn the store-bought pieces into individual
statements.
No doubt that model railroad building offers lots of opportunities
to dig around the house and see what treasures can be discovered
that can be worked into the scenery. Old toys, souvenirs from
vacations, scraps of advertisements, bits of local foliage can all
be 'recycled' into your own special creation. With ample amounts of
paper mache, foam board and polyester fiber, you can concoct
landscapes that weave into the design and can be painted and
decorated as desired.
Organize a field trip to collect local tidbits to add to the
scenery. Sprigs of evergreens can be crafted to look just like tiny
trees, and tiny rocks and shells can be gathered to line the
gullies and stream beds. Mosses and lichens can be collected, dried
and painted to give dimension to landscapes.
And there is also a background to be considered to give that
realistic touch to the scene. Deciding how to best incorporate a
backdrop needs to be addressed at this stage to increase the
chances of creating a seamless illusion to your model railroad
scene. You can chose from an array of stunning backdrops to
purchase or you can plan to create your own.
